The Bible - Why believe it?

Many people want to believe the Bible, but they run into skeptics or are somewhat skeptical themselves. Let me share some points to show that the Bible is more than a legend or a book of faith.

One way the Bible is very different from other religious books is, that it contains real historical events.

  • The nation of Israel gets mentioned by the Egyptians as early as 1213/1203 BC.
  • Several kings from the Bible are mentioned in the historical records form the countries around it: David, Omri, Ahab, Jehoachin, Jehu, Ahaziah, Joram, Uzziah, Hezekia.
  • You can still look at the tunnel that Hezekia built as a preparation for the Assyrian attack. The Assyrians even show a picture of the Biblical figure King Jehu! More examples: www.everystudent.com

Places from the time of the Bible are still known today:

Jerusalem, including the temple-mount (evidence for the Biblical-Temple!), Bethlehem, Nazareth, Capernaum, Sea of Galilea, etc.

Israel is a nation today

No matter what you think of the current Israel, as a nation. It is extremely unique, that Israel was a people group and a nation from before 1000 B.C. They got exiled by the Babylonians and returned after several decades. They got exiled by the Romans and spread out over the entire world. Yet they maintained their inheritance, culture and distinguished themselves as a people group. Returning as a nation in 1948 A.D. I believe this is prophesy in the making.

Prophesies in the Bible have come true:

  • A good example: Daniel was transported to Babylon in 606 BC and lived until ca.560 BC. He received a prophesy from God about the future: A kingdom would overthrow the Persian Empire and after the death of its first ruler, it would be split up into 4 kingdoms. Read details in Daniel 8
  • More than 200 years later Alexander III "the Great" was born in 356 B.C. and died at the young age of 33, in 323 B.C., but during his life he became one greatest military commanders in all of history. Alexander conquered the vast Persian Empire. He ruled from Greece to India, and suddenly died in Babylon. He had no heir and so His kingdom was divided among four of his generals - Syria went to Seleucus, Egypt to Ptolemy, Greece to Cassander and Thrace to Lysimachus.

You can find many more examples in the Prophesies about a Messiah, which are fullfilled in Jesus.

It is commonly accepted that the Bible is the most popular and most sold book in the world. Kingdoms and empires have tried to destroy and annihilate it, but instead it has thrived and today it exists in more languages than ever.

Joshua Project

It is created by 66 writers over a time period of 1500 years, yet it does not contradict itself.

Scientific Accuracy

Job 26:7 mentions that earth hangs in space. Something the Bible declared many years before it became a proven fact.Ecclesiastes 1:7 describes the Hydrologic Cycle. Psalm 102:25-27 the law of entropy. Leviticus 17:11 the importance of blood in the life process, Ecclesiastes 1:6 Atmospheric Circulation and so on...

Ps 102:25-27

Lev. 17:11

Eccl. 1:6

The Scriptures accuracy over time has been proven by findings of earlier manuscripts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The current Bibles in use are astonishing exact, compared to old manuscripts found.

Jesus and His disciples were not a Legend or a Lie:

  • They are mentioned by Jewish and Roman sources of the same time period outside of the bible: Flavius Josephus, Tacius, Pliny the Younger, Thallus. <Video>
  • The gospel-accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) were in circulation, when the people who knew Jesus, were still around. They did not dismiss them, instead shortly after Jesus death & resurrection thousands of people accepted it and believed that Jesus is the Christ.
  • The disciples paid with their lives as martyrs for their believe/claim that they saw the risen Jesus. This only makes sense if they actual saw the risen Jesus. They wouldn’t have done that, if they knew it was a lie.

The most important reason to believe that the bible true, because it can change your life!

The Bible says, that it is the Word of God. It is the best book to find and get to know God!  The only way for you to see that, is to read it for yourself and ask God to reveal His truth to you.

I recommend you start with reading the book of John. This book is written so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God! (John 20:31)
