Angels – God’s Secret Agents

But first a true story

John Paton was a missionary in the New Hebrides Islands. One night hostile natives surrounded the mission station, intent on burning out the Patons and killing them. Paton and his wife prayed during that terror-filled night that God would deliver them. When daylight came they were amazed to see their attackers leave.

A year later, the chief of the tribe was converted to Christ. Remembering what had happened, Paton asked the chief what had kept him from burning down the house and killing them. The chief replied in surprise, “Who were all those men with you there?” Paton knew no men were present--but the chief said he was afraid to attack because he had seen hundreds of big men in shining garments with drawn swords circling the mission station.

What are Angels? Angels are REAL beings! They are not folklore. Many people describe angles with a harp and flying around on a cloud. That's not what they are. The bible teaches that Angels are spirits. This means they are super-natural and can appear, but can also be invisible. They think, feel, have a will and display emotions. They are created and therefore had a beginning. They are different beings from humans. The for example they don't marry. They were created before the earth and rejoiced when they saw God putting this world together. They are describes as powerful hero's "mighty ones". Not just your average kind a person. And......... they are active in the world today!

What do Angels do? The bible says they are "ministering spirits" to serve "those who inherit salvation”. Angels help and serve Christ’s followers. They are listed as protectors, liberators and shown to be in battle. They cast judgement, as we read that an angel struck Herod. The bible talks about bands of destroying angels. It is said the angels party in Heaven, when someone becomes a believer in Christ. This shows that Heaven watches what is happening on earth and it is considered very significant when someone turns to Christ!

Can we see angels? The bible teaches that Angels are invisible/spirits. This means an angel could be in the room with you right now. From time to time, they show themselves visible. They bring a message, like the angel Gabriel to Mary. Many times they can be seen by some, but not by others. The report of Elisha in the bible is a good example. Elisha saw an entire army, while his servant did not see anything, until the Lord opened his eyes. The missionary story of John Paton is another  good example, as he did not see his protectors, but his attackers did and fled the scene.

Can we talk to angels? Yes – the bible teaches that angels appear with messages or revelations from God. Angels appeared to Daniel and John with a message. The angel that set Peter free from prison hardly spoke with him. The bible does not support people having a “close-friendship” with angels. They come, do their task and leave. The bible teaches that centraol to our faith is a personal relationship with Jesus, not with angels.

Do Angels have names? The bible shows three names for angels: Gabriel, God's messenger that appeared to Daniel and Mary. Michael, the archangel/general, who appears in revelation. The third angel with a name is Lucifer the fallen angel.

Are there different types of angels? Yes – the bible describes several different types. The Cherubim, is the angel describes with two set’s of wings and those were displayed above the ark of the covenant. There are also Seraphims, which have six wings. Other angels appear to be just like human beings and are not seen with wings. Some angels are in charge of other angels, like Michael the Archangel who appears to be a “general”.

Are there guardian angels? When Jesus was talking about the children He was blessing, he mentioned that “Their angel…..” This verse seem to support that at least kids have a personal angel watching over them.

Are Angels of a higher level than people? Angels are currently on a higher level than people, as they are in a glorified state. When the followers of Jesus enter the new Heaven, they will receive glorified bodies and will rule over angels.

Can angels sing? Yes the book of Job says that angels were singing and rejoycing as God  was creating the Earth.

What is a “Fallen angel?” Before the world began, God created Heaven with the angels. The bible describes one angel, a cherubim, as a very high ranking person in the kingdom. Ezekiel 28:11-19 describes it. This angel became proud and wanted to become like God. He enlisted 1/3 of the angels on his rebellion to overthrow God. His name is Lucifer (KJV). His rebellion occured some time between when he was created and when he appeared in the garden of Eden - in an obviously state of rebellion against God. He is many times referred to as Devil, Satan or Dragon. The fallen angels who banded with him are sometimes referred to as demons or evil spirits. Demons are angels that are in rebellion against God. Therefore you must be on your guard even against angels that claim to bring a message from God, but their message does not line up with the bible.

Who is the "Angel of the LORD"? The best example of this angel is, when Abram saw three angels come to him. One of these three is referred to as the "The LORD". It is clear that this "Angel-of-the-LORD" was not an angel, but an appearance of God. Many scolars think this may have been an early appearance of Jesus.

How many angels are there? The bible mentions several times numbers of angels. For example on mount Sinai 10,000 angels came down when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. John saw 10,000X10,000 angels -and then some. These verses show that there are millions of them.

Can we meet our ancestors as angels? No – after this life, people go to either to Heaven or Hell. Angels are different beings from people, they serve God and can move between Heaven & Earth. If you think you have seen your ancestor in spirit-form, it is not your ancestor, but an imitation of him/her by a spirit demon. Coming soon: The lesson Satan, Spirits, Spiritual Warfare.
